Uqausivut – Our Language

Ina Zakal With funding from Canadian Heritage, Aboriginal Languages Initiative, the Ottawa Inuit Children’s Centre is pleased to launch Uqausivut, a new project aimed at supporting and increasing Inuktitut speakers in Ottawa Inuit families. Activities aimed at the preservation of Inuktitut in an urban setting are particularly important, as Inuit in the south face many challenges in maintaining their mother tongue. Inuit children growing up in Ottawa are especially vulnerable to language loss when they attend English speaking schools and are surrounded by English and French in their urban community. The Uqausivut Project offers the following activities to assist families in retaining and reclaiming Inuktitut in Ottawa.

1. Inuktitut Resource Library
An Inuktitut Resource Library includes a variety of Inuktitut cultural and teaching resources to be used throughout OICC programs and is accessible to other Inuit and non-Inuit organizations in Ottawa. Take a look at our catalogues of available resources by clicking on a catalogue name listed under "Catalogues Available"

2.  Inuktitut Children’s DVD

An Inuktitut Children’s DVD will be produced in the second year of the project that will include songs, stories, games and activities in Inuktitut.

 3.   Inuktitut Language Classes
Inuktitut language classes will be offered to parents, children, and youth on a weekly basis beginning in January 2009. Elders will be included on a regular basis to share knowledge and tell stories in Inuktitut.

 4.  Parent Workshops

Parent workshops are delivered that focus on the importance of speaking Inuktitut to children at home from birth. Workshops are offered in Inuktitut, and an Elder is included in each session.

 5. Staff Development/Capacity Building

The Uqausivut Project Coordinator works closely with each OICC program staff to build and strengthen their ability to integrate Inuktitut into their program.

 6.   Inuktitut Learning Circles

The Uqausivut Project Coordinator conducts daily Inuktitut learning circles with children who attend the Sivummut Head Start and Tumiralaat Child Care Centre. Circles consist of games, songs, calendar, stories, books and activities in Inuktitut.
