Ottawa Inuit Children’s Centre Youth Programs For Children/youth in Grades one and up

Program Descriptions

Monday Nights 4:30-7:30

Youth StaffHomework Club: 3 Tutors to assist youth in Homework and school success activities. Healthy Supper
included. Participants help with food preparation. Other activities include structured free play and
computer time.

Tuesday Nights 4:30-7:30

Homework Club: 4 Tutors, included a staff from Crossroads Children’s Centre, assist youth in Homework
and school success activities. Healthy Supper included. Participants help with food preparation. Other
activities include structured free play and computer time.

Wednesday Nights: 4:30-7:30

Culture Night: Children/youth participate in various cultural activities including: printmaking, drumming,
throatsinging, and learning from Hunters and other speakers. Healthy supper including country food
provided. Other activities include time for homework, structured free play and computer time.

Friday Nights: 4:30-7:30

Recreation Night: Children/youth participate in physical activities including road hockey, basketball,
soccer/baseball and other outdoor or gym activities. Healthy supper included. Other activities include
time for homework, structured free play and computer time.

Saturdays: 10:00-12:00 and 12:00-3:30 Next Session starts in January

Inuktitut Classes: Children/youth participate in language classes; activities include games, songs and
sharing. Healthy snack included.

Art Classes: Participants enjoy a healthy lunch and art instruction from a qualified art teacher from the
Ottawa School of Art. Other activities include structured free play, outdoor time and computer time.

The afterschool program is funded by Ontario’s After School Initiative and Indian and Northern Affairs.

 

A great example of youth learning positive examples can learn about a healthy environment and even share it with other children, demonstrated in a flash interactive created by Ryan. Some examples include learning to throat sing, homework mentoring, and lighting the Qulliq from our honoured friend and guest Reepa Evic-Carleton.
