Family Literacy Program

  • Elder Storytelling
    • Entire family welcome
    • Country food provided
  • Storytelling Circles for children 2 – 6
    •  
      • a group experience for children  focusing on the pleasure and power of using stories, songs, activities and rhymes together.
  • Storytelling Circles for toddlers:  a group experience for toddlers with stories, rhymes, songs & activities
  • Youth and Pre-youth Activities
    • Photovoice: 
    • workshops:  hip hop, songwriting, visiting authors, photography
    • traditional storytelling
  • Caregiver/Parent workshops & activities
    • Culturally appropriate topics
    • promotes literacy skills & primary language use in the home
    • writing workshops
    • photography & writing
    • book-making
    • traditional crafts
    • helping children with school readiness
    • RAAP (Reading & Parent Program:  a book lending program including books, crafts, reading & language tips, poems & songs.  Packs go home with children every two weeks).
  • Scrabble Night
    • Monthly evening activity for the family
    • Game prizes & door prizes!!
  • Photovoice Photovoice combines photography and writing workshops to give people tools to document their lives, as only they can really know them.  Workshops are followed by public  Exhibits which helps to raise awareness about the urban Inuit community and which are hosted in various locations around Ottawa.
  • Book Lending Library
    • Over a 1000 titles for all ages
    • Books in Inuktitut & English
  • Infant & Parent:
    • Weekly circle for parents of children zero to two in collaboration with Tungasuvvingat Inuit
  • Family and Community:  Family outings to art galleries, museums, festivals and libraries in Ottawa.  These events combine fun & learning while introducing families to some of the City’s cultural opportunities.  The Family Literacy also hosts Coffeehouses featuring Inuit artists approximately twice/year. 


This program is developed based on the needs and interests identified by the community
